Cooperating School Districts’ CHARACTERplus offers numerous character education programs, including the Caring School Community™. CSC is a multiphase, comprehensive, school-wide program whose central aim is to help each school become a “caring community of learners” that effectively promotes students’ intellectual, social, and ethical development and teachers’ continuous improvement of practice.
One CHARACTERplus member that participates in CSC is De Soto Junior High School. Recently, CHARACTERplus State Coordinator Tami Bopp attended a school year kick-off at the school, where staff members were introduced to “The Character Warrior” – who reminded staff members to be role models for students and to have a good attitude. In addition, all school staff received a T-Shirt that displays the common language that they will use for student conflict resolution when it arises: talk it out, work it out, walk it out.
Each staff member received a character T-shirt that displays on the back the common language
they will use for conflict resolution:
‘talk it out
work it out
walk it out’
De Soto Junior High core character traits are respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship. Results show that schools participating in CSC have high collegiality among staff, increase in student achievement, decrease in discipline referrals, and positive effects on school safety and climate.
